How are YOU helping the environment with our Carbon Neutral Conscience Free raw Welsh Honey?

For some time we have been concerned about the impact we have as a species on this planet which affects biodiversity, ecology and the climate. We are all intertwined yet we, as humans, are creating the biggest affect, and not always in a good way.

Offering a choice for YOU

We recognise that when we sometimes go shopping, and maybe it’s the only store around, that should we wish to purchase say tomatoes yet all of them are covered in plastic we have little choice. Its either have tomatoes in plastic, or none. We recognise therefore that there is a big onus as producers to help customers create that change by offering a CHOICE. All of our packaging therefore come plastic free. It’s the same with CO2 emissions and we offer YOU a 100% Carbon Neutral raw Welsh Honey, a sustainable honey. Our honey comes Conscience Free.

That choice is a fully sustainable honey that produces no Carbon Emissions when looking at everything together. For us that means no CO2 has been produced by supplying YOU with our delicious raw Welsh Honey. How do we do this?

No Carbon emissions from us

More detail is in the 100% Carbon Neutral section ut succinctly we reduce our emissions by using only parts which are sustainable (i.e. wood), produce our own electricity and when we need to purchase electricity we only buy green energy. There is absolutely NO GAS OR HEAVY OILS in our bottling process in terms of heat for the building or using electricity. There is sadly emissions from our vehicles as its impossible to get to our colonies with electric vehicles. We will wait for that day as it is likely to be soon. We mitigate this with us selling our green energy produced on site as we are reducing the need for fossil fuelled power stations.

An intelligent choice of materials

Whilst being sustainable in energy terms we ensure all of our products are supplied in recyclable materials. Our jars are made of glass (made from 88% recycled material), our steel lids are recyclable (also made from some recycled material) and our labels and boxes are made to be recycled (again with a proportion of recycled material). So we are plastic free.  But there is energy used in their manufacture. To mitigate these we are planting trees on our own land to capture CO2 over a 100 year lifespan. We are planting many trees to make sure we cover the needs of the business for many years to come.

Bees in the hive

We plant on our own land to ensure that we keep true to our word. For as long as the farm is within the family we will retain all of these trees to their full potential. Unfortunately, we have heard stories in the press of many companies investing in tree plantation schemes only for them to be ripped up by new owners some 10 years later. We will ensure that this does not happen.

How do YOU save CO2 and help sustainability with our Welsh raw artisan Honey?

So, all of our raw Welsh honey are CO2 neutral at the very worst. How do YOU save CO2? As purchasing our comes with absolutely no CO2 should YOU use our Raw artisan honey instead of purchasing granulated sugar YOU will be saving all the CO2 that would be involved in that production. Its staggering that for every 1kg of sugar, 2kg of CO2 is pumped into the atmosphere And that is by purchasing ‘local’ European sugars made from sugar beet. Sugar cane produces a lower carbon footprint, but then it is shipped from quite far away so food miles must be considered. By using our sustainable honey instead of granulated sugar YOU are reducing CO2 into the atmosphere 100%.

Bees supported
Cilgwenyn Welsh Honey

Let’s be honest, we as a family do need to feed ourselves and to sustain our family. One of the ways we have chosen to do this is through sustainable beekeeping. We need to face facts, should the bees not produce an excess amount of honey that we can sell we would be a charity and seek donations. But no beekeeper is a charity (yet many profess to be!) We do this with no harm to the bees, keeping them using only organic principles.

But the investments we make in looking after them is based on a small reward for us, the sale of raw Welsh Honey. We therefore do keep more bees than what we need as a family as we supply this honey to others. But there is a bonus with this too, ecologically and environmentally. So with every jar of Welsh Honey purchased by YOU, the more investment can be made into more bees again.

Pollination

With us keeping more bees there are more bees to pollinate our areas where they are placed. With the rapid reduction in natural pollinators bees kept by us are filling a gap. But this gap is only supported by people buying our honey. That is why we can say categorically how YOU have helped to pollinate our areas by purchasing our 100% Carbon Neutral raw Welsh Honey, sustainable honey.

Climate change Welsh Honey & Pollination

By buying our Welsh Honey YOU are supporting not just agriculture and farming but helping to reduce the risk of climate change. This is helped by ensuring pollination happens as the diversity of plants ensures that they survive. Many plants need seeds, and many seeds need pollination. Without the seed’s plants do not evolve to our changing climate keeping them going for the next generation.

But the sustainability of flora also helps with locking in CO2. Plants lock up CO2 not just in leaves, but its stems and roots. This is a bit too tricky for us to measure here accurately, but we look forward to the day when research publishes these results. When we say our Welsh Honey is CO2 neutral, we mean everything we do here to sadly create some that is measurable. But it has wider affects where CO2 is locked up, but is not measurable right now. Rest assured the bees supported the pollination, so more CO2 is locked up!

What’s not to like about our raw Welsh Honey?

Briefly, the more of our raw artisan Honey is consumed YOU  reduce CO2, reduce plastics, reduce the effect of business’ on the climate and create more natural pollinators. And whilst all enjoying a lovely local raw Welsh Honey. What’s not to like? This is why we are a leading ethical Honey brands for a small Welsh honey company, simple local beekeepers selling honey through our raw honey shop.
